Due to the recent mass shooting in Milwaukee, Douglas Dietrich brings up yet again the topic of gun violence prevention. After multiple public mass murders on a nearly daily basis, THE TIME TO TAKE POLITICAL ACTION IS NOW. The key to preventing gun violence is early intervention and healthcare, not mass school shooting drills which further traumatize students. Communities need to be able to recognize individuals who are most at risk, offer counseling to trauma and abuse victims, and help people through times of personal crisis. Not only will these measures help prevent gun violence, it will benefit the overall wellbeing of the whole community.
The First Amendment also needs to be repealed so that hate speech, fake news, and shooters’ manifestos can’t be spread freely on social media, which directly contributes to more gun violence. Douglas Dietrich considers what a world without social media would look like, where people shift their focus back to local politics, filling in pot holes, and taking care of people within their own local communities. Right now social media allows angry incels (involuntary celibates) to meet each other online and form groups which help them self-justify and radicalize their sexist, racist, and nihilistic ideologies. Research has proven that the “mass shooting pathogen” is contagious, meaning mass shooters are often inspired by other mass shooters and mass shootings tend to happen in clusters.
